Ambush II

Ambush is not your typical Grand National winner. He would claim the race in 1900, doing so when running for the second time in the contest, but the story comes with his ownership.

Bred in Ireland, he was purchased by the Prince of Wales, and later, he was bought by King Edward VII. This makes him the first winner of the Grand National to be owned by the Royal family and wear their racing silks.

The horse would be both trained and ridden by Algy Anthony, a really unique feat, more known for being a jockey than a trainer, but with this race, he did both jobs.

There was no doubt Ambush was one of the leading contenders this year, and the betting show agreed with that. He was a strong galloper with excellent jumping abilities and some great form in the book. Sent off at 4/1, he would stay on strongly and go clear in convincing fashion to land the race in style.

Given his Royal connections, his win in the race made the headlines across the country, and not just with sports fans, but with everyone who had an interest in the Royal family.

He would run in the Grand National a total of four times in his career, once before and then twice after. First up, 7^th in 1899, a year before his win. Then after winning, he would return again, but not until 1903, so three years later.

Here he would fall, and sadly, he would also fall a year after that, in 1904, his last attempt at the Grand National.

But despite those, he will always keep his victory in the race, and one that drew way more attention than a normal success in the era. This was down to the ownership, but it still shone a light on the horse.
