One of the bigger names during his era of national hunt racing, Bravemansgame has spent a long time running against the best of the best. Trained by Paul Nicholls, owned by John Dance, and being one of the biggest names that Dance owns, he’s excelled over both fences and hurdles.

Despite never really looking like a strong stayer, Bravemansgame would make his debut in the Grand National in 2025. Tiring towards the end of the race, he would eventually finish in 15th position, under jockey James Reveley.

Bravemansgame’s Early Years

Running for Nicholls, the horse would begin his life in bumper races, and he’d make a winning debut to immediately catch the eye, before progressing on to run in hurdle races.

His first real top-quality showing on the track would come at Grade One level, when he would win the Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury. If there was any doubt about this horse, he showed exactly what he was capable of on this day.

But despite winning at the top level over hurdles, it was fences where he would really make his mark and become a top-quality animal.

Chasing came easily for him. He was a brilliant jumper, foot perfect on many occasions. One of his best performances as a novice came in the Grade One Kauto Star Novices’ Chase on Boxing Day in 2021, his speed and foot perfect jumping round were a delight to watch.

Bravemansgame’s Big Race Wins

The biggest day of his career would come the following season, and it would arrive at the same course, and on the same day, as he would head to Kempton for the King George VI Chase, one of the biggest races on the calendar.

He would land a commanding victory in the race, delivering on the biggest stage for trainer Nicholls, who had an excellent record in it. From then, the horse would go on to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2023, where he would finish second.

However, he didn’t quite stay the distance in that contest, the extra couple of furlongs plus the uphill Cheltenham finish both going against him.

But despite that, he would continue to run over these slightly longer distances, and would eventually head to the 4 m 2 f Grand National in April 2025. Trainer Nicholls clearly fancied chancing his arm that the horse would be able to last out, but he didn’t in 2025.
