Canelo Grand National Wins

Canelo has never won the Grand National.

They have never finished the race.

Canelo spent most of his career trained by British trainer Alan King. He ran in many top handicaps during his career and ran in the Grand National once. That was in 2021, when he failed to finish, falling at The Chair on the first circuit, the 15th fence of the race.

Foaled in 2013, the horse was owned by JP McManus throughout his career and racked up five wins under rules. He was known as a good jumper on his day, that sadly wasn’t able to get him around the Grand National course when he made the race in 2021.

Canelo’s Early Years

Canelo began his racing career in Irish point-to-point races, with two runs in that sphere before moving over to the UK. He fell on debut after being well fancied and was then second on his final start in a point-to-point, which was an impressive run, enough to see him bought for rules racing.

He would begin his career under Alan King by running six times over hurdles, winning two of them. But they didn’t come until after he’d gained a little experience, his first three runs resulted in two second-placed finishes and a fifth-placed finish.

His last three runs were much better, he won two and, in the middle of those, ran in a Grade Three contest where he came fourth. Next up for Canelo, it was chasing, he always looked like being a chaser, so this was a logical step in his career.

Canelo’s Big Race Wins

Canelo won five races during his career, which is a little disappointing, given the level of quality he had. Two of those came over hurdles, and three over fences, where he was running in a much better grade. Despite that rise, just one of those wins can be considered a big race win.

In December 2020, he won the Rowland Meyrick Grade Three handicap chase at Wetherby, one of the most competitive and tough handicaps in the North of England. The race has often been used in the past for future Grand National runners, and just a few months later, Canelo made his way to the 2021 Grand National.

Since that Grand National fall, he struggled to get his form back to anywhere near that kind of level, which prevented him from being rated highly enough to run in the race again.
