Chantry House is a horse that has always carried a reputation with him, from his very early days. The horse would make his mark as a chaser and would show ability over longer distances that would take him all the way to the top level of racing.

In 2025, he would make his Grand National debut, a combination of dropping down slightly in class and experimenting with the extreme trip, which led him there.

He would complete the course, but could only finish 16th. In this particular year, he was the last horse to finish.

Chantry House’s Early Years

Foaled in 2014, Chantry House would be under the guidance of one of the most formidable partnerships in British racing.

Owned by JP McManus and trained by Nicky Henderson, he was definitely in good hands. This came about after they bought him during his younger days, after he made his mark in the point-to-point field.

The horse would win a point-to-point in impressive fashion, and after that, he was sold at the Cheltenham December Sale, where McManus would spend just under £300,000 on him in 2018.

That price tag stayed with him, but when making his rules debut at Warwick in 2019, he would live up to it, winning a bumper and from then on, progressing through the ranks.

Flat races, followed by hurdles, and then chase races, were the latter where he really made his mark and went to the top.

Chantry House’s Big Race Wins

The big races that Chantry House won all came over fences, this move up to the bigger obstacles was the real making of him. Form would go to a whole new level, and while he did have the odd hiccup with his jumping, generally speaking, he was a better jumper over the bigger fences.

They would begin in his first year over fences, too, as a novice. After progressing through the year nicely, Chantry House would end up at the Cheltenham Festival, running in the Grade One Marsh Chase.

Favourite Envoi Allen fell early, which changed the complexion of the race completely, and Chantry House was the one to take advantage. This success, in March 20121, was his first at Grade One level, and it was also the first part of a huge spring double.

After winning at Cheltenham, the horse would then go to Aintree, running in the Grade One Mildmay Novices’ Chase, and he would win again, taking two of the biggest novice races of the spring. This success was a 32-length win, where he looked as good as he’s ever done.

The following year, success would continue, winning the 2022 Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, a key Gold Cup trial. He would go on to run in the Gold Cup, but was pulled up.

The win in the Cotswold Chase this particular year was a big one for his owner. He would give JP McManus his 4000th winner of his career, a huge achievement for one of the biggest owners in the game.
