Come Away Grand National Wins

  • 1891 - ridden by Harry Beasley Snr trained by Harry Beasley

1891 Grand National Winner Come AwayCome Away would be successful in the Grand National on his only attempt in the race, one trip to Aintree for the race, and one victory. He would win the race in the year 1891.

It was a family success too, are Harry Beasley Sr was the trainer, and Harry Beasley Jr was the winning rider. There are no official records of the winning margin, but there are reports online that look back at the race and say it was won in a narrow finish.

Despite having no previous experience in the race, Come Away was strongly fancied by punters, sent off as short as 4/1 to win the contest. Trained in Ireland, his success was celebrated in the country, and while the Beasley stable was already on the map, this win further enhanced their reputation.

For reasons unknown, Come Away never returned to run in the race again, keeping his perfect record intact.

It was a strong year for the formbook of the Grand National. Ilex, winner a year earlier, would finish third here, and Cloister, who would come second, would finish second again the year after, and then win it the year after that.

While it’s tough to piece together form when it’s so long ago, and with so many variables in a race like this, on paper at least, this shapes up as being an incredibly strong renewal of the Grand National. It was won by Come Away, in a reportedly narrow fashion, bringing big success for the Beasley family.
