Covertcoat Grand National Wins

  • 1913 - ridden by Percy Woodland trained by Robert Gore

Covertcoat Horse

Covertcoat would run in the Grand National a total of three times in his career, winning his middle attempt at the race in 1913. It was a strong victory, and while it was a big day for him, that was also the case for his trainer Robert Gore.

A field of 26 runners would go to post in 1913, and this is seen by many as the last ‘true’ Grand National run before World War I, as the field was affected a year later.

The going was soft, and conditions were testing, so it was a true Grand National in the sense we all know and love. Percy Woodland was the winning jockey on the day, navigating a trouble free round on the course, while also managing to stay in close contact with the leaders throughout.

He stayed on strongly up the run in, and would win by a distance of two lengths, returning with an SP of 100/9.

This success was a back to back success for the yard of Robert Gore, who followed up his 1912 win in the race with Jerry M. Both horses were owned by Sir Charles Assheton-Smith, so it was back to back wins for both the trainer and owner, making this an even more special event than usual.

In his other attempts at the race, Covertcoat would fall in 1912, a year earlier, and then finish 8th in 1914 when he was trying to defend his crown, which would be his last try at the race.
