Drumcree Grand National Wins
- 1903 - ridden by Percy Woodland trained by Sir Charles Nugent
Drumcree would win the Grand National in 1903, the biggest success of his career. He would be a horse that really targeted the race, and it’s no surprise, as it brought out the best in him.
He would run five times in the Grand National, with the win coming at his third try in the race.
They began in 1901, when he would almost win it at the first time of asking, finishing second behind Grudon. He would run again in 1902, this time finishing 7th in the race.
Then came the breakthrough, a win in 1903, a career highlight, and a first success for trainer Sir Charles Nugent. Ridden by Percy Woodland, the only time he rode him in the race, the horse was in the front rank throughout, holding a strong position.
When they got to the end of the race, he had enough left to go ahead and would keep the lead late on to win by a length and a half.
After some time off, when he didn’t appear at Aintree, the horse did return to the Grand National in 1906, three years after his win. He managed to complete, but could only finish in 8th position.
Despite that, the horse would come back once more, for the final time, in 1907. However, this was the only time he could not complete the course, falling in the race.
Soon after, he retired from the sport and was allowed to enjoy his later years peacefully after achieving plenty.
