Empress Grand National Wins
- 1880 - ridden by Tommy Beasley trained by Henry Linde
The winner of the 1880 Grand National was Empress, who led home a field of just 14 runners to claim the prize.
This would be the one and only time he would run in the Grand National, a one-time runner and one-time winner.
The horse started off a double victory for trainer Henry Linde and jockey Tommy Beasley, they teamed up to win the race again in 1881, and almost landed it in 1882, finishing second, denied of a historic treble.
Back to the horse, he would win the contest by two lengths on the day, racing on good ground. Sent off with an SP of 8/1, he wasn’t favourite but plenty of people fancied him, despite a lack of experience with this race.
As we look back in time, there are many Grand National winners that have gone completely under the radar, and you’d say Empress is one of them.
