Good Boy Bobby horse with handler in stables 2022

He was a horse who got off to a lightning-fast start during his racing career, winning seven of his first ten starts in impressive fashion. Things have slowed since then, but Good Boy Bobby has been able to mix it with some very good horses in many top races over the years.

Foaled in 2013 and trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies for his entire career, this horse has developed into one that needs a long trip to be seen to the best of his ability, while fences have also brought out the best in him. An excellent start to the 2021 season led this horse to the 2022 Grand National at Aintree, a big day out, but the horse was pulled up with four fences to go after being tailed off.

Good Boy Bobby’s Early Years

The first time we saw Good Boy Bobby on the racetrack was in November 2017, when he won a national hunt flat race on debut at Chepstow, winning by a nose. He would run in four flat races that season, winning three of them and the only one he lost was when he was stepped up in quality to run in a listed contest.

He was then sent hurdling the following season, and again, his record was strong. He won his hurdling debut at Carlisle by two lengths and again won three of his four starts that season, including a very big 44-length win at Southwell.

At this point, he’d run eight times, won six and was placed in the other two.

Next up came novice chasing, and at this point, he wasn’t as prolific but began to move up in quality. He won just one novice chase start from four runs but did finish second in a good race at Cheltenham and fifth in a Grade One novice chase at Sandown.

Good Boy Bobby’s Big Race Wins Up Until 2022

The end of 2021 was the most fruitful part of Good Boy Bobby’s career, he won two big races here and set himself up for a crack at the Grand National in 2022.

First up came a listed handicap chase win at Wetherby, a strong victory made even more impressive by the fact this was over just two miles and three furlongs, so less than his usual distance. A good second then came in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, another listed contest.

The horse then landed the biggest win of his career by going back to Wetherby and winning the Grade Three Rowland Meyrick handicap chase, a hugely competitive and valuable Christmas handicap in the north.

He won by just under two lengths, and this victory came at the more suitable distance of three miles. It was this big race win that would set him up for a crack at the National, and from this win, that was the race he was trained for.

When going to the Grand National, he faded over the four-mile trip and was eventually pulled up with four fences to go.
