Gregalach Grand National Wins
- 1929 - ridden by Bob Everett trained by Tom Leader Jnr
Gregalach would have a fantastic racing career, with the Grand National being his main target throughout. That led him to run in the race a total of six times, completing in three of them.
He would record one win in the race, while he would almost win it again as he recorded a second-placed finish two years later.
Gregalach’s victory in the 1929 Grand National at Aintree is one of the biggest upsets in the race’s history. Starting at 100/1 odds, the nine-year-old at the time defied all expectations of him in what was a chaotic renewal that featured an unprecedented 66 runners. This was the largest field to run in the Grand National and will never be beaten due to the current restrictions that are in place around the field size,
Alongside having a really large field, the going was heavy and visibility on the course was very poor. A tough test was made even harder with the runners, then the going and visibility simply made it impossible for many.
This was the second huge Grand National upset in as many years, as prior to this race, Tipperary Tim would win the 1928 Grand National at the same odds of 100/1.
After winning his first attempt, every time that Gregalach returned to the Grand National, he would have more weight on his back. From six total runs, he would complete the course three times. A second placed finish in 1931 was his next best effort, while he would round off with a 7th placed finish in 1934 in his last-ever run in the race.
