Kellsboro’ Jack is one of quite a few horses that have been to the Grand National just once over the years and managed to win on their sole attempt at the race.

He would go to the contest in 1933 for his one and only visit, though his team at the time, trainer Ivor Anthony and jockey Dudley Williams, did share plenty of Grand National experience between them.

The horse would win on quick ground, officially described as good to firm, and would record a winning distance of three lengths, returning with an SP of 25/1.

An American-bred horse, Kellsboro’ Jack would become the third American runner to win the Grand National, and a story about what happened prior to him winning the race is one of the great Grand National stories.

He was owned by American F.Ambrose Clark, who would bring his string over to England to run in prestigious events each sprint, this particular year saw Kellsboro’ Jack make the journey.

However, at the time, the owner had been seeing little success with his runners who had made the trip, so he thought that he was a jinx on them. With this in mind, he would sell the horse to his wife Meg for £1 prior to the Grand National, changing the ownership in the hope that he would no longer be a jinx on his runners.

Of course, as we know, Kellsboro’ Jack would come out on top, so perhaps the change of ownership did the trick for the group!
