Kilmore Grand National Wins
- 1962 - ridden by Fred Winter trained by Henry Ryan Price
Kilmore was a four-time runner in the Grand National, a horse with plenty of stamina and great jumping ability, making him the perfect horse for the race. He was able to show this when he ran, and in 1962, he would win the contest at Aintree.
Sent off at 28/1 on the day, he was the first of 32 runners home. After the race, jockey Fred Winter, a great of the game, remarked how he could not believe that no one else, other than him, seemingly fancied the horse to win after a very impressive showing a year earlier.
Winter was a previous Grand National winning jockey, a big race rider, and knew exactly what was needed to win the race at Aintree, so it’s fair to say that more people should have been listening to him when he spoke about this runner.
1961 was the first Grand National that Kilmore contested, finishing a very respectable 5th place, proving his ability, showing he could jump well around Aintree, and having the stamina to last out. With less weight on his back, it seems easy to say now that there were plenty of reasons for hope, but at the time, no one really saw it.
A year after his victory, he would return to defend his crown, but more weight on his back proved to be too much, still jumping well and finishing 6th. He would have one final crack at the race in 1964, where he fell, and was retired from the sport soon after.
Kiilmore’s Big Race Wins
The makeup of Kilmore really allowed him to become somewhat of a Grand National specialist, with the right blend of jumping ability and stamina to really thrive at Aintree.
For this reason, his entire season was built around heading to Aintree for the National, with prep runs before, and that led to him not really being involved in too many big races because of that.
A good horse, but one that didn’t do too much away from the Grand National and, therefore, didn’t land any other big wins other than the 1962 race at Aintree.
