Lutteur III Grand National Wins
- 1909 - ridden by Georges Parfrement trained by Harry Escott

The win of Lutteur III in the 1909 Grand National would give the race a French feel, as there was a lot of France involved in this win.
The horse was French trained, ridden, bred, and owned, the clean sweep at Aintree, something that made sure there was a lot of interest around the horse and his history.
It makes him one of very few French trained runners to win the race, generally they don’t do very well in it, but this was a strong performance.
The horse was brought over to England as a real unknown, and was ridden by a French amateur in Georges Parfrement, who even the biggest racing fans knew very little about, which of course only added to the intrigue of it all.
He was sent off at odds of 100/8, you can’t help but think that was low given the lack of information around the horse, but perhaps the bookmakers were just being extra cautious with him.
23 runners would line up, and he was kept in a handy position. One by one, runners would exit the race, or struggle to keep up with the pace, but not Lutteur III, he kept on going. As the field thinned out, he remained in front rank and would take the lead approaching the final stages of the race, keeping going and running out a six length winner.
This would be the first of three Grand National efforts for the horse. He would be back in 1911 when he fell, and then again in 1914 when he ran a great race and finished third.
A special mention also to his trainer Harry Escott, who would land the first of three Grand National wins here, showcasing himself as being one of the strongest trainers of the time, with plenty of good horses.
