Oxo Grand National Wins
- 1959 - ridden by Michael Scudamore trained by W Stephenson
The horse Oxo would record one Grand National win from two starts, with his success coming in 1959. His Grand National was a real test on the runners, with 34 starting the race but just four able to finish it.
He was well fancied on the day, sent off as the 8/1 second favourite. The only runner ahead of him in the market was Mr What, who was favourite after winning the race a year earlier.
Oxo would come back for another attempt at the race in 1961 but was unable to complete the course, pulling up at the 22nd fence.
Trained by Willie Stephenson and ridden by Michael Scudamore, this was the only success in the Grand National that either of those men would have.
The race is known for causing a debate in Parliament, which was designed to discuss the safety of the race and find out what improvements could be made to ensure the safety of both riders and horses.
Oxo’s Big Race Wins
There is very little in the record books about Oxo and his career, and certainly nothing in there about big race wins other than landing the Grand National.
A relatively quiet horse with little in history about him, the Grand National was definitely the biggest day of Oxo’s career by some distance.
