French bred runner Perceval Legallois has spent his entire career as a racehorse in Ireland after being purchased as a youngster by big owner JP McManus and sent there, where he would head to the Gavin Cromwell yard.

He would really come to life during the 2022/23 season, which was over hurdles. Numerous strong performances came throughout the year, but a win in a Listed contest in February would highlight that this horse was always going to be a good one.

On top of this, he looked like a chaser and was bred to be one, so he was performing well early in his career, looking like a horse that would only improve. Just as expected, the move to bigger obstacles brought out even more from this individual.

With the switch to chasing the following year, he took a big step forward, which was always expected rom him. He would win the Listed Paddy Power Handicap Chase at Leopardstown in December of 2024 to really jump into the limelight. Fancied and amongst the favourites, he would win the race by seven lengths, a comfortable success in a usually incredibly competitive race.

He’s been to other big races during his career and has disappointed a little, including in the Kerry National and Galway Plate. So, there is a question mark over his consistency, but on his day, he’s a top-quality staying chaser who can trouble the very best of them.

The test of running over four miles is something he’s yet to prove himself with, but he’s stayed on very strongly in races at around three miles. He definitely looks the part as a Grand National runner, but he does need to prove it, both in terms of being a more consistent runner and handling the extreme distance of the race.
