Quare Times Grand National Wins
- 1955 - ridden by Pat Taaffe trained by M Vincent O’Brien

The 1955 Grand National would be won by Quare Times, a horse that would visit the Grand National just once during his career and come away from the race with a perfect record.
In the aftermath though, this was one of the few occasions where actually the trainer of the horse, Vincent O’Brien, was getting more attention and being talked about more than the winning horse.
This is because O’Brien had landed the Grand National for a third consecutive time, a truly remarkable feat, and to make it even better, he would do so with three different horses.
O’Brien would have four runners in the race in 1955, including the horses that won for him in the two previous years, but despite not being his most fancied, it was Quare Times who came out on top.
The 1955 Grand National was slightly different to others, with bad ground forcing changes to the course. There was no water jump due to the bad ground around that fence, while others were also changed to make things a little safer.
For this reason, some said the test wasn’t as strong as normal, but that shouldn’t take away from Quare Times. This was on top of changes already made due to an inquiry into the race after four fatalities in 1954.
Quare Times’ Big Race Wins
Quare Times’ won plenty of minor Irish events during his career and ran well in a number of bigger races in the UK.
The biggest win of his career before the Grand National was the National Hunt Chase, which he won a year before winning the Grand National. This four-mile chase proved that he had the stamina to get round Aintree when the time came.
After Aintree, he didn’t run too many times, with injury plaguing him during the latter part of his career.
