2023 Grand National
Prior to the 2023 Grand National, Roi Mage reportedly suffered and injury in January 2023. He came seventh, being ridden by Felix De Giles. Considering his odds of 33/1 he ran a tremendous race keeping in with a great chance right up until the second to last fence then lost the momentum for the win.
2024 Grand National
Since the 2023 race and how well he did, trainer Patrick Griffin will have most certainly kept a great focus on developing Roi Mage for a second, even better attempt at the 2024 race. With less than a handful of other races in-between 2023 and 2024, Roi Mage will have been kept primed and ready Really, it could be said that he was in a better position in terms of fitness for the 2024 race than in 2023. That said, he came ninth in 2024; two places behind 2023. In the grand scheme of things, that is pretty consistent across both years.
During the race, Roi Mage started for the first third of the race in the rear group, not showing any signs of passion or fire. He made an early mistake at the 13th fence which could have caused a slow, however he gradually moved through the pack after fence 18. Roi Mage was a prominent horse for a while and commentators were saying his name thinking of his chances. But a mistake at the 27th fence certainly impacted his chances of taking the win. Roi Mage was 25 lengths behind the winner. Roi Mage, at 12 years old is an older horse, but all things considered he really could do it again.
