Irish gelding Stay Away Fay is trained by Paul Nicholls and has already recorded a win at the top level, albeit over hurdles.

A strong six-length winner of a point-to-point race, he was then bought for just over £300,000 at the 2021 Cheltenham December sale, which would begin his time with Nicholls.

In terms of the Grand National, the horse would make his race debut in 2025, when he was one of the Nicholls runners, though not really fancied either by the bookmakers or based on jockey bookings.

Unfortunately, the horse was unable to complete the course and would pull up at the 21st fence, which is partway around the second circuit.

Stay Away Fay’s Big Race Wins

Earlier in his career, back in March 2023, Stay Away Fay would record the biggest win of his career so far, winning the Grade One Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sent off with an SP of 18/1, he wasn’t really fancied on the day, and that’s despite having some pretty strong form in the build-up. It was a little fortunate, as Corbetts Cross, who was favourite, ran out at the final hurdle and Stay Away Fay was the one to capitalise.

In the 2023/24 season, he would transition to fences and win the Grade Two Esher Novices’ Chase at Sandown. His quality was enough to take him to the better races, both as a novice and in open company, with aims including the Cheltenham Gold Cup laid out for the horse.

One interesting off-the-track moment came for the horse in 2024, when one of his owners, Chris Giles, decided to exit the sport. However, the horse was able to stay in the same yard and ownership group, as existing owners rebought the horse at the sales for £325,000, effectively buying out Giles.
