Stumptown is an Irish-bred gelding that has risen through the ranks of horse racing to compete at the top level of the sport. Trained by Gavin Cromwell, his rise has been slow, but he’s now featured on some of the biggest stages.

He’s been a consistent performer and regular winner, catching the eye of many as he rose through the ranks. He’s also a very versatile horse, winning across many different distances and disciplines during his time in racing, which is often a trait shown by an above average runner, which he clearly is.

As a youngster, he began over hurdles before moving onto chases, which is where he really started to shine, using his quality jumping to his advantage. He would also move over further distances when running over fences, something else that allowed him to shine, being a horse full of stamina.

With a liking for longer distances and also races that offer something a little different, Stumptown would turn to cross-country races, and it’s this type of racing that gave him his biggest career win to date.

2025 Cheltenham Festival Win

The big day for Stumptown would come at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival when he was sent off as the 5/2 favourite for the cross-country chase. He would carry top weight after impressing and winning over C&D earlier in the season and had plenty on his plate, with a whole host of challengers.

But Stumptown would rise to the challenge and pull away to win the race in grand style, giving himself a festival win and a big moment for his jockey, trainer and owners. Partnered by Keith Donoghue, the pair would record a seven length victory, and he would be a popular winning favourite for punters.

His second win at Cheltenham, he proved the first was no fluke by following up in a bigger race. Straight after his festival win, trainer Gavin Cromwell detailed that the plan would be to go to the Aintree Grand National next with the horse, the stamina and jumping test of the race playing to his strengths.

There will be a lot of people drawing similarities between Stumptown and the great Tiger Roll. He also loved the cross-country chase at Cheltenham and won that race en route to winning the Grand National.

Of course, Stumptown has a way to go to be spoken about in terms of being the same quality as Tiger Roll, but they are taking a similar course.

Tiger Roll was a horse that really captured the nation’s heart. If Stumptown could get even half of that under his belt, then he would prove to be a very popular Grand National pick.

He had a good go on his debut, making it all the way to fence 28 before having to be pulled up, so a future Grand National isn’t out of the realms of possibility.
