Sundew Grand National Wins

  • 1957 - ridden by Fred Winter trained by F Hudson
1957 Grand National Winner, Sundew
Sundew

It was very much a case of third time lucky for Sundew, who goes down in history as a horse that won the Grand National at the third attempt he had in the race.

Prior to his success, which came in 1957, he raced twice before in the Grand National. Both times, he made it around the first circuit but fell on the second. This left punters thinking he shouldn’t be considered as a potential winner, which led to him being sent off at 20/1 for the contest.

His win in 1957 would be the final time he would in this contest. His trainer was Frank Hudson, a very small-time trainer, and his two appearances at Aintree with this horse were the only two times he would ever have a Grand National runner. He was more known for having flat runners, and actually, at the time of this win, Sundew was the only jumper he had in his yard.

Fred Winter was the man on board, a man who would go on to be a top-quality jockey, though at the time of this ride, his career was only really beginning to take off. Winter was having his third Grand National ride. He would later go on to win the race again in 1962, along with many other top events.

Not only would Sundew win the Grand National, but he would do so the hard way. He was the leader for almost all of the race and kept on pulling out more to record a winning distance of eight lengths.

Sundew’s Big Race Wins

Sundew didn’t have much success in the bigger races despite being a horse with a good rating, good enough to be able to run in the top events.

He did win his final start before winning the Grand National, a fairly big race, that was the Grand International Chase at Sandown. He would lead from start to finish in this contest, just like his Grand National win.

Other races he ran in included the Grand Sefton Chase and Great Yorkshire Chase during his Grand National winning season, but he wasn’t able to land a blow in those.
