It was a case of one run and one win for Teal, who would land the Grand National in 1952, for the team of trainer Neville Crump and jockey Arthur Thompson.

The pair combined to win the 1948 Grand National. This was their second win together, and Crump would win the race for a third time as a trainer later in life.

Teal won the Grand National by five lengths and recorded a nice victory, but the race itself wasn’t a very memorable one, and actually what happened before the race is talked about more.

There was a 10-minute delay to the start due to runners rushing the tape and causing a false start. It took some time for them to be brought back, rounded up once again, and the tape set for a second start.

A few runners didn’t handle this particularly well, but Teal clearly did, handling the change of routine and going again in good style. This showed off the horse’s strong temperament, able to ignore what was happening around him and just keep his mind focused on the task in hand.

He would never return to the Grand National, leaving himself with a 100% race record.
