Troytown Grand National Wins

  • 1920 - ridden by John Randolph Anthony ‘Jack’ trained by Algernon Anthony

Troytown 1920 Grand National WinnerTroytown would have a short but very memorable time in the Grand National, with just one appearance in the race. However, it would be a winning one. His sole appearance came in 1920 when he was victorious.

While the horse had no Aintree experience and no other moments with the race, his trainer and jockey combo cannot say the same. Algy Anthony trained the horse, and he would have two Grand National winners in his career.  Jack Anthony would ride him and win the Grand National three times during his riding career.

The win for Troytown was a straightforward one if there’s such a thing with the Grand National. Early in the race, Troytown would go into the lead. He jumped strongly and simply stayed there.

He would keep going and win the race by a distance of 12 lengths, home as the first of six runners that were able to finish on the day. He would win the race as a seven-year-old, arguably just entering the prime of his career.

However, despite some good wins in 1919, the horse would not have more than another couple of years of racing for fans to enjoy due to an accident on the track. In 1921, he would head over to France to participate in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, however, he fell in the race and broke his leg, which led to him being put down on the course.

He had plenty left to give, and while being nine meant that he was heading out of his prime, horses at the time did generally run for a lot longer, so he still had plenty to give.

He was a very good winner of the Grand National but a horse that would not return to run in the race after his win. Who knows what would have happened had he not fallen in France.
