Woodbrook would run in the Grand National on two occasions, having a taster at the race for the first time, and then winning it on the second occasion.

Trained by Henry Linde, he’s been ridden by two Beasley’s in the Grand National. First up, Harry Beasley, but then during his second race, ridden by Tommy Beasley.

Tommy was one of the most successful amateur jockeys of the time, a renowned rider who many people knew and respected.

It was 1880 when the horse had his first attempt at the Grand National, and he would run well, completing the course and finishing in 5th position. Then in 1881, he was back for more, and this time he would do better and win the race.

He would win the contest by four lengths, ahead of Regal, who won the race in 1876.

While the horse grabbed the headlines, most of them were actually held for the trainer and jockey involved in this instance. Henry Linde and Tommy Beasley had teamed up to win this race in 1880, and landing it here gave them back-to-back successes, and they did it together.

They would actually almost make it three from three a year later, finishing second with Cyrus.

But back to the horse, a good jumper, one that got round this tough track twice in a row, and of course, the last of those was a win. Caught up in talk about his trainer and jockey, but Woodbrook deserves plenty of credit himself for his Grand National win.
