2023 Francky Du Berlais 16 - Peter Bowen

British-based jockey Ben Jones had his first Grand National ride in 2023, courtesy of Welsh trainer Peter Bowen. He rode Francky Du Berlais in the race, one of the big outsiders in the betting market, but the pair did manage to get around the course, despite never looking like getting involved in the finish.

They ended in 16th place, coming home at a steady pace, and it will no doubt have been a great thrill for the young jockey to get his first attempt over the big fences on perhaps the biggest stage of them all in UK racing.

Jones is a great ambassador for those who have to do it the hard way as a jockey. Although he has connections as a work rider for many yards, when it comes to getting rides on the track, rather than one source, Jones has slowly built up a list of trainers who will offer him the chance when needed.

He sometimes has to rely on others not being available for whatever reason, but the fact that so many trainers trust him to ride on occasions is a great positive for his ability. He will look to cement that over the coming years further.
