A youngster who hit the racing scene early and rode his first winner under rules at just 18 years old, Darragh O’Keefe arrived as being one to watch out for. His story so far has certainly lived up to those expectations.
A few months after his first winner, if you’d not heard of Darragh O’Keefe, you certainly would have when he won the £100,000 Listowel Handicap Hurdle at the Listowel Festival to really put himself in the spotlight at one of the big meetings.
In the 2019/20 season, O’Keefe won the Irish Champion Conditional Jockey Championship and did so with a record number of winners. He recorded 45 wins that year, one more than Jack Kennedy the year before, who was the record holder at the time for the number of conditional winners.
In December 2020, O’Keefe rode his first Grade 1 winner, riding A Plus Tard for Henry de Bromhead to success in the Savills Chase at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival. This would again put O’Keefe in the spotlight on a big stage in Ireland.
2022 saw him have his first ride in the Grand National, and it was a successful first attempt. He managed to complete the course. He finished sixth, riding Longhouse Poet for Martin Brassil, and given his early success, it would be no surprise to see him go better than that sometime soon.
