David Bass has been best known in horse racing for the excellent partnership that he has struck up with trainer Kim Bailey. It’s been a real ride for them both, and through the early 2020s, when Bailey was on the up, so was Bass, so the pair accompanied each other very well to some of the biggest races on the calendar.
The Grand National is a race that Kim Bailey always has his eye on, and Bass has been given a few opportunities to ride his horses over the years. In terms of the race, though, Bass began riding a horse for someone else who he used to have a partnership with, and that was Nicky Henderson. In 2014, the pair teamed up to give Bass his first Grand National ride on Shakalakaboomboom, though unfortunately, they were unable to finish the race as the jockey pulled his mount up at the 20th fence.
In 2016, the Bass and Bailey combination almost got their hands on the Grand National when The Last Samurai finished second in the race, eight lengths behind the winner Rule The World.
Bass and Bailey have been together for Grade One successes and wins at the Cheltenham Festival and will be hoping to add the Grand National to their list of accolades.
