A jockey who rode to stardom at a very young age, James Bowen is another member of the Bowen family that is really working hard and making a splash in the racing industry. Brother Sean is a jockey, and dad Peter is a trainer, and between them, the three have really made waves with the family name over the years.

At just 16 years old, James Bowen shot to fame in the racing world when he became the youngest-ever jockey to win the Welsh Grand National. It was back in 2018 when he did it, riding the Gavin Cromwell-trained Raz De Maree to victory. To make the whole story even more bizarre, there was actually only three years difference in age between the horse at 13 and the jockey at 16.

Since then, James has always been in the spotlight, and not too long after, began to also ride for Nicky Henderson, putting him inside one of the biggest yards in British racing.

Beginning riding in point-to-point races, James made the transition to racing under rules seem effortless, bagging a hugely impressive 57 winners in his very first season as a budding jockey under rules.

The Grand National is a race that every young jockey wants to win, and after tasting success in the Welsh Grand National, the Aintree showpiece is undoubtedly one that James wants to tick off the list when he gets the chance. He took his first Aintree Grand National ride back in 2018, riding the Richard Hobson-trained Shantou Flyer.

An outsider in the race, the pair nearly made it all the way round, but eventually, Bowen pulled his mount up at the 26th fence, just four from home, so they didn’t quite get round. However, with many years in front of him, this young jockey looks set to have many more chances of winning the Aintree big one.
