Born in 1989, Michael Nolan has had a long career as a jockey, going for well over a decade, after making his professional debut in 2010.
Working his way through the ranks during that time, in 2023 he was given his biggest role yet, appointed as the stable jockey to the Phillip Hobbs and Johnson White yard, which allowed him to take up plenty of big rides on their runners.
As for the Grand National, despite having a pretty long career, Nolan would actually only make his debut in the race in 2025, and unfortunately for him, it was one surrounded by controversy.
Nolan would ride Celebre d’Allen in the race, a horse that was pulled up after the final flight due to exhaustion, and after that, the horse would collapse on the course.
Further bad news came as the horse would sadly die three days after the race. The ride given to the horse by Nolan came under a lot of scrutiny, and in the end, he was given a 10 day ban for continuing to ride the horse when he was visibly distressed. It came under fire both from the racing community, and from activists who are against racing.
Speaking after, Nolan expressed his sorrow for the incident, and his ride, saying that he was heartbroken, more so than anyone could imagine.
He will be hoping that further rides in the race can give him the chance to be painted in a positive light, as he looks to rebuild his reputation.
