Shane Fitzgerald has every chance of emerging as the next big talent from Ireland. Hailing from County Cork, Fitzgerald has made a real splash during his early years in the sport and is seemingly destined to become one of the biggest names on the Irish circuit.

Fitzgerald rode his first winner under rules in March 2021, with a winner at Wexford. From then on, he’s gone through the ranks and had a number of nice winners to boost his stock. He won the Kerry National in 2021, as well as some other good handicaps, something that really brought him to the attention of many trainers.

One of those was Joseph O’Brien, the trainer who would give Fitzgerald his first ride in the Grand National, which came in 2023. On that day, the jockey rode A Wave Of The Sea for O’Brien, and the pair managed to navigate the course at Aintree and finish a very respectable 9th position in the race.

It was a great start for Fitzgerald, and whether you are thinking about the Grand National specifically or racing in general, you can’t help but think he’s only going to get better with time. He is a young jockey with plenty of promise, which could make him interested in the Grand National moving forward in the race.
