Theo Gillard Grand National Wins
Theo Gillard has never won the Grand National.
Their best finish to date was in 2023 with Minella Trump who came 15th.
Theo Gillard has become a name that people follow on the Northern circuit, and the biggest, perhaps only, reason for that has been the connection this jockey has with trainer Donald McCain. Whether it’s the middle of winter or summer jumping, McCain has a lot of horses in training, which means plenty of opportunities for his jockeys, and Gillard is one of them.
Thanks to that, we’ve seen him make his mark on what would be described as regular racing, away from the bigger meetings, and the next step for Gillard will be to start earning rides in bigger races. That may have to come away from McCain, but he’s certainly doing enough to put himself in the shop window.
In April 2023, Gillard had his first Grand National ride, and it was his boss McCain, who had previously won the Grand National, who gave him his chance on the big stage. Gillard rode Minella Trump, a horse who had proven his jumping ability but perhaps not his staying ability. However, they did manage to complete the course, finishing in 15th position, making it round.
Given his rising stature in the North, Gillard is expected to pick up more rides in big races like the Grand National in the coming years.
