2022 | Top Ville Ben | Fence 28 - Pulled Up | - | Philip Kirby |
Thomas Dowson, better known as Tommy Dowson, has emerged as one of the leading jockeys on the Northern racing circuit, mainly thanks to his excellent partnership with trainer Philip Kirby. The pair have had many big race wins over the years and are often found dominating the Northern cards on a regular basis.
When Kirby was going through an excellent period, in the late 2010s and early 2020s, he had Dowson riding his best horses by his side. Names such as Lady Buttons, Top Ville Ben and Nautical Nitwit were all trained by Kirby and ridden by Dowson when they had their best success on the track.
Prior to joining the Kirby team, Dowson picked up a lot of vital experience underneath both Maurice Barnes and Rose Dobbin, two strong Northern yards. He was a success before Kirby but took it to a new level when he joined and rode out his claim in 2019 while he was with the yard.
At a young age, Tommy said that his ambition as a jockey was to ride a winner of the National fences, something he is going to put a lot of effort into trying to achieve. In terms of the Grand National itself, Dowson had his first attempt at winning the race in 2022, and it was on a horse trained by Kirby, Top Ville Ben.
A real standout performer from the yard, and a strong staying handicapper who could jump well, in many ways, he was a great horse for a first attempt at the race. Things went well, and the pair nearly made it round the full race but just fell short when Dowson decided to pull Top Ville Ben up at the 28th fence, just two fences from home because he felt the horse was tired and ready to stop.
