1841 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

2nd Earl of Craven – Owner of Charity

The 1841 Grand National would attract a small field, the smallest at the time, with just 11 runners going to post. Still in its infancy and running off level weights, the race wasn’t popular enough at the time to attract big fields, though this would, of course, slowly rise over the years.

In something that was unheard of, whether in the early years, middle years or modern day, almost all of the field managed to complete the course. Of the 11 runners, 10 of them got home, with Lottery, a previous winner, the only one who failed to do so.

The winner of the race was Charity, who was running for the second time in the Grand National here. He unseated his rider in 1839 and would come back to run again in 1844, where he was pulled up, so this win was the only time that he completed the course.

He was sent off at odds of 14/1, and the ground was officially described as good to soft on the day.

William Vevers was the winning trainer, and this was the only runner that he would ever send to the Grand National. He did train the horse for all three attempts at the race, with this middle attempt being the successful one.

Riding the horse was Horatio Powell, who would have plenty of rides in the race during its early years, but this was the only time that he was successful. A year after this win, he would finish second in the race on Seventy Four, almost completing back-to-back victories in the contest.

Charity’s owner was William, the 2nd Earl of Craven.
