1844 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

The 1844 Grand National was run in pretty bad conditions, with rain on the day and falling throughout the race. That, plus a week full of rain in the build-up, left the going as heavy, making this a real test for the competitors involved.

Winning the race was Discount, who was sent off as one of the co favourites on the day, returning with an SP of 5/1. A total of 16 runners would run in the race, with nine of those managing to complete the course, which is impressive given the conditions.

Despite being tough, there was no stopping Discount, who would come away and win with ease in the end, recording a winning distance of 20 lengths in total.

This was the first time that Discount had run in the Grand National and would also be his only time running in the race, leaving him with a perfect record.

That was also the same for his trainer, Mr Quartermaine, who would also have just one attempt at winning this race, and it was a successful one. Both left the race behind with a perfect one from one record to look back on.

Jockey John Crickmere was having the second of three rides in the race when winning here, which would be his only win in the Grand National as a jockey. He finished 3^rd a year before and 5^th a year later, so he did manage to complete the course on all three of his rides in the race.
