Just five runners from 22 starters would complete the 1846 Grand National at Aintree, which for this year was officially known as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase for the very last time.
The winner was Pioneer, a horse that was very unfancied in the market and returned with an SP of 200/10, or in modern pricing, 20/1.
The winner from the previous year, Cure-All, was back to try and defend his title but could not complete the course and was pulled up.
Pioneer was here for his first try in the race, recording his only win, but he did return for the next two years to try and win again. In 1847, he would complete and finish in 4th position, while a year later, in 1848, he would fall and fail to complete.
Just like the horse, the trainer on the day, who we only know as Mr Adams, was having his first attempt at the Grand National, too. It would be his only attempt, as he would not train the horse when he came back, leaving the trainer with a perfect record of one win from one runner in the race.
The jockey on the day was William Taylor, and while he was also having his first-ever ride in the race, he did go on to have more in the race in the future. This was his only win in the contest, but he did have four more rides in the race, his next best effort was a 4th placed finish in 1848.
