1848 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1848 Grand National Chandler
Chandler

Ran on heavy ground, the 1848 Grand National was a tougher test than normal for the runners, but that did not stop a record field at the time being attracted to the race. A total of 29 runners would take part, and they were led home by the winner, Chandler.

The 12 year old would go on to win by half a length, with The Curate back in second place.

Matthew and Pioneer, the previous two winners of the race, both ran again here but were unable to complete the course.

The winning trainer was Tom Eskrett, who would actually only ever train this particular horse for the Grand National, so his overall race record is precisely the same as the horse’s.

That’s also the case for the jockey, Captain Josie Little, who would only ever ride in this race on Chandler and no other runner.

The three of them would win this race at the first attempt in 1848 before running a further twice in the contest over the next two years. A year later, when trying to defend their crown, they would finish fifth, and then in 1850, their final attempt at the race, would fall and go out.
