The 1852 Grand National had a winning mare, as Miss Mowbray crossed the line in first place to take the race at odds of 12/1. The race was run on good ground this year, and nine of the 24 runners would complete the course and finish.
Abd-El-Kader had won the race for the last two years and was coming here trying to land a hat trick of wins, but he was pulled up on the second circuit and failed to finish.
The winner, Miss Mowbray, was having her first run in the race and would go on to come back for more. Twelve months later, she would finish a close second when trying to defend her crown, and then in 1855, her final Grand National, she would fall.
The winning trainer of Miss Mowbray was George Dockeray, a man who had seen plenty of Grand National success before this. He would win a total of four Grand Nationals, and this would be the final of those, towards the end of his career.
Beginning with a win in 1839 on Lottery, he would also win the race in 1840 with Jerry and then 1842 with Gaylad.
While he brought plenty of experience, the winning rider, Alex Goodman, certainly didn’t. This was his first ever Grand National ride, and he was fortunate enough to be able to win the race at the first time of asking.
A strong career as a jockey saw him win the race once more, with a success on Salamander in 1866, which was at the end of his career and one of his final rides in this race.
One of the first mares to win the contest, Miss Mowbray, will go down as a one-time winner, but a year later, it could easily have been two victories.
