The 1853 Grand National was won by Peter Simple despite his advancing years. At the time of this win, he was a 15 year old, and he would actually run a year later, too, as a 16 year old, clearly a horse with great longevity.
He would take the race at odds of 9/1, with conditions being officially described as soft heavy in places. Twenty-one runners would take part in the race, and nine of them would go on to finish it, with Peter Simple leading them home.
He was chased home by Miss Mowbray, the winner of this race in 1852, who almost made it back to back success here, but was narrowly denied.
Peter Simple was winning the Grand National for the second time, first taking this prize in 1849. He would have a total of six runs in the race, completing on three of those, with two of them being wins.
The winning trainer was Tom Olliver, and he was also the winning rider here too, doing the double. He didn’t train this horse when he won for the first time, and as a trainer, this would be the one and only success that Olliver would have in his career.
He did have more success as a jockey, though, and when he won this race, he was in the middle of his overall career, coming to an end as a rider and just beginning as a trainer, which is why he did both on this winner.
As a rider, he would land his first winner in the race in 1842, riding Gaylad to victory. A year later, he would land back to back wins as he rode Vanguard to success in 1843. Ten years later, he made it three wins here, towards the end of his riding career.
