A total of 20 runners would take part in the 1854 Grand National, and the horse to lead them home and win the race was the well-fancied Bourton.
Sent off with an SP of 4/1, he was favourite on the day, and that was despite two previous attempts in the race that both ended with him failing to finish. From the 20 that began the race, just nine were able to finish, with the race being run on good ground.
Bourton had been in the race for two years prior to this win, in 1852 and 1853, and was pulled up on both occasions, but this time, he would manage to complete the course and make it count by winning.
The winning trainer was Henry Wadlow, and he wasn’t the trainer prior to this run. This was actually his first-ever runner in the Grand National, and it turned out to be a winner. He would try again with two runners the following year but was not able to land any more success and never had any more runners after that.
John Tasker rode the horse to victory, and he was having the fourth of his five career Grand National rides here. In every other race, he failed to complete the course. The one time he was able to get around, he was on the winner.
The winner from the previous year, Peter Simple, was back for more here, and he was able to complete the course but could only come home in 9th place.
