1857 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1857 Grand National Emigrant
Emigrant

The winner of the 1857 Grand National was Emigrant, and he would win his first Grand National at the second attempt. Crossing the line in first place, he was one of 11 to finish the race, from a total of 28 that began.

The race was run on ground that was described as soft, good to soft in places, and Emigrant would return with an SP of 10/1, putting him amongst the fancied runners in an open betting market.

Emigrant was here having his second Grand National start after showing promise a year earlier. He would finish 6th that time around and used the experience to his benefit to get the win here.

He was both ridden and trained by Charles Boyce. He would begin his life as a jockey before moving into training a selected number of runners. Emigrant was the only horse that he would ever train and ride together, doing so for both of his Grand National attempts.

Boyce would try to win the race as a trainer with four runners, all across 1856 and 1857, with this horse making up two of those runs. As a jockey, he would have 14 rides in the race. This victory on Emigrant was the only time he would win.
