The 1858 Grand National gave a huge test to those involved due to the weather conditions. It was snowing on the day and during the race, and that had already officially made the ground heavy, so it was an incredibly difficult time for those involved.
A total of 16 runners would take part in the race, and only five of them would be able to finish. They were led home by the winner, Little Charley, who would have an SP of 100/6.
This success for Little Charley would come at the fourth time of asking in this race, he used his experience very well and to his advantage in terrible conditions.
He would run in the race for five consecutive years. That began in 1855 when he was brought down. He would finish 5th in 1856, was brought down again in 1857, and would then claim his victory here in 1858.
A year later, he returned to try to defend his crown, but he could only finish 10th in that contest, which was his last Grand National run.
William Holman was the winning trainer, he would train Little Charley for the last two of those five Grand National bids. This would be winner number two in the Grand National for Holman, who first had success in this race two years earlier with Freetrader in 1856.
He would go on to train the 1860 winner Anatis, making this the middle of his three Grand National wins, which all came in a five-year period.
The winning rider was William Archer, who would win this race on his very final ride in it. He had previously ridden in the race eight times, the best of those saw him finish second on Spring in 1854. He would go one better here at the ninth time of asking and end his Grand National career on a high.
