The 1860 Grand National gave us a winning favourite as Anatis crossed the line in first place, returning at odds of 7/2 and as the market leader.
He would win the race by half a length from The Huntsman, who was back in second place. The race was run on ground officially called good.
A total of 19 runners would begin the Grand National this year, and eight of those were able to complete and finish.
Anatis would come here on the back of a very respectable 5th-placed effort 12 months earlier in 1859, and that was partly the reason why he was fancied in the market.
He would return to Aintree for both the 1861 and 1862 Grand Nationals, trying to win the race for the second time but did not have much luck. On both occasions, he was pulled up by his jockey, Tommy Pickernell, who would ride him on all four of his runs in the race.
Pickernell was winning the race for the first time here, at his second attempt to win the race. While we didn’t know it at the time, he would go on to have an excellent and very long riding career, and as part of that, he would win the Grand National three times.
The Lamb in 1871 and Pathfinder in 1875 would be his follow-up successes.
Trainer of Anatis for his win in the Grand National was William Holman, and of the four attempts in this race by Anatis, he would only train him for this particular one, the win.
Holman had plenty of other success, too and would win the Grand National three times in his career. This would be the last of those. He would win the race in 1856 with Freetrader and then again in 1858 with Little Charley, meaning he would take the Grand National three times in the space of five years.
With six placed horses, alongside those three winners, and a very long career, Holman was a trainer who really understood the race in its early years and knew what it took to win it.
