1864 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1864 Grand NationalThe 1864 Grand National saw a familiar team in the winner’s enclosure. The same trainer, jockey and owner would win both the 1863 and 1864 Grand Nationals, and not only that, but they would also do it with horses that were related to each other.

The winner of the 1864 race was Emblematic, who would come away from the field to win by a distance of three lengths on ground that was officially described as soft, good to soft in places.

The winner was a mare, a rare occurrence at the time and also in the present day. A year earlier the same team would strike with a horse called Emblem, and Emblematic was a full sister to Emblem, so it was very much a familiar feel to this particular race.

Winning trainer was Edwin Weever, who would be having his second Grand National winner here after landing his first a year before. He would go on to have a further seven runners in the race but would fail to get a win from any of those, however, he did end with two winners, which is still good from the attempts he had.

Although he didn’t get any further winners, having two from two in two years to kick start his Grand National career was certainly impressive and made Weever one to watch during the early part of his career.

The winning jockey was George Stevens, a man who would end his career with an excellent Grand National record. In total, he would have five winners in the race from 15 rides.

His first winner was Freetrader in 1856, followed by Emblem in 1863 and this win with Emblematic in 1864. He would then win the race in back-to-back years again, in 1869 and 1870, with The Colonel.

He would go down as one of the all-time greats of the era, with a record that few would ever go on to match.

A year after this race, Emblematic would return to Aintree to try and defend his crown. He would run a great race with plenty more weight on his back and would place and finish third, a valiant effort.
