The 1867 Grand National was won by Cortolvin, who was coming here back for more after a close second a year earlier. This time, he would go one better and win the race.
He was returned at odds of 100/6, which was a surprise given that he had excellent form from a year earlier, but despite no strong market vibes, he was able to get the job done.
Going on the day was officially described as good, with much better conditions for the runners than we had seen a year earlier when it was soft and snowy.
This would be the second and final time that Cortolvin would run in the Grand National. He would not come back to defend his crown a year later.
The winning trainer was Harry Lamplugh, who was bagging the second Grand National win of his career here, the first coming in 1862, five years earlier.
He would end with two victories from 10 starts, and also had a second-placed finish too. Lamplugh did not train Cortolvin when he ran in the race in 1866. Chris Green then trained him.
Alongside this, Lamplugh was one of the first Frenchmen to win the Grand National, born in France, though he did his horse training in the UK.
The jockey on the day was Johnny Page, and he had ridden Cortolvin a year before. This was his first Grand National success, on his third attempt to win the race. He would go on to have more success later in his career when Casse Tete won the 1872 edition of the Aintree contest.
