Twenty-five runners would take part in the 1872 Grand National at Aintree, and 13 of them were able to finish. The race was run on very quick ground, with the official description of it being firm.
Winning the race was Casse Tete, who would come away from the field to record a winning distance of six lengths. He would win the race with a 20/1 starting price, not really fancied by too many people in the market.
The horse was having the third of his five career starts in the Grand National here, and barring this run, he didn’t really have much luck in the contest. In three of his other starts, he failed to finish the course, while a year before this run, he did complete it but only finished 14th.
This one was much better, though. The stars aligned, and he was able to get the job done and win.
His trainer was A.Cowley, who had plenty of Grand National runners during his career, but this was the only winner he would have in the race from a total of 12 attempts.
Riding the winning horse was Johnny Page, a man who would end his riding career with a pretty good race record. This was the second of two wins for him, the first being a win on Cortolvin in 1867, following that up here.
He would also have three placed efforts, ending his riding career with two wins and three places from a total of 11 mounts in the Grand National.
