1873 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1873 Grand National Disturbance
Disturbance

The winner of the 1873 Grand National was Disturbance, who would win the race at odds of 20/1. The going on the day was described as good.

He would do so in good fashion, coming away from the field to record a winning distance of six lengths in what would be the first time he had ever run in the race.

A year later, the horse would return to try and defend his title, but he was only able to finish in 6th place that year. He was trained and ridden by someone else during that return.

This time around, he was trained by James Machell, a trainer who was sending his first-ever horse to the Grand National, and he won in style on this debut. A small-time trainer, he didn’t have many horses under his name to run, nevermind having horses for a race as big as the Grand National.

The winning rider on the day was John Richardson. Equally a smaller racing personality, he was having his third Grand National ride here, the first two were unsuccessful in the two years prior to this.

When winning the race with Disturbance, this pair would both be recording their first Grand National wins. However, they would not have to wait long to bag their second.

After teaming up here, 12 months later and, the pair would team up in the race again, and this would also result in a win for them. For Machell, it was two wins from two Grand National runners, and he would have no more runners in the race, leaving him with a perfect record.

Richardson would also bag his second and final win in the race. It would also be his final ride in the contest, bowing out in style with back to back wins.
