1877 Grand National: Results, Runners & Fallers

1877 Grand National
Fall of Bellona and Ballot Box at Fence 2

The Grand National of 1877 was won by Austerlitz, who would take the race with a starting price of 15/1.

Racing on ground described as good on the day, he would win the race by an official distance of four lengths.

This would be the only time that Austerlitz would run in the Grand National, leaving him with a perfect record in the race, one run and one success during his racing career.

Robert I’Anson Jr was the winning trainer, his only Grand National win and this would be his first attempt at winning the race. He was also a regular horse rider at the time and decided to ride his other runner, Shifnal, in this race, but could only finish in 9th position.

Shifnal would go on to win the Grand National a year later but would no longer be trained or ridden by I’Anson Jr.

The jockey that took the winning ride here was Fred Hobson, and this would actually be the only time he rode in the Grand National, so just like the horse, he had a perfect record in the race. Hobson was also the owner of the winner, making this an even bigger day for him.
