The 1887 Grand National was won by Gamecock, he was no stranger to the race and went close 12 months earlier, this time around, he was able to come home in first.
He would win the race by three lengths, with Savoyard back in second, and this pair were a long way clear of the rest of the runners, having an exciting finish between themselves.
The race was run on good ground, and despite having a good run in the race 12 months before, Gamecock was still sent off as a 20/1 shot, one of the more unfancied runners, but he was able to out run those odds and come home on top.
Gamecock would return to Aintree after winning. He would run in the race for seven consecutive years, which is an achievement in itself. His win in 1887 was the highlight. He placed in 1886 but failed to get another place or win after that.
His winning trainer was James Gordon, who would train him for the first three of those seven runs, including this win. After winning the race, he would move elsewhere, and he would be the only Grand National runner that Gordon would ever have.
The winning jockey was Bill Daniels, another with little experience at Aintree. He would have a total of five Grand National rides. This success was the fourth of those. It would be the first time that Daniels was able to complete the course and the only winner he would have as a jockey.
