The 1890 Grand National saw the race favourite come away from the field to land a commanding win, successful just as a favourite should be, though, of course, with the Grand National, it doesn’t always go to plan.
Winning the contest was Ilex, a six-year-old who would take the contest at odds of 4/1. He was strongly fancied in the market and duly obliged.
Going on the day was described as soft, and just six runners were able to complete the course and finish the race.
The horse was having his first run in the Grand National, and he would return to the race for the following two years after this. On both occasions, he was able to run well and finished third place in both 1891 and 1892.
He was carrying around two stones more when putting up those very respectable efforts despite not being able to find the winner’s enclosure again.
Ilex was trained by John Nightingall, who was having his second Grand National career win here. He first won the race in 1878 with Shifnal and followed up in good style here.
The winning rider was Arthur Nightingall, and this would be the first of three career wins for him in the saddle. He would be known as an excellent Grand National jockey for his time.
The three years came in an 11-year period, and he would also have six placed efforts in the race, emphasising how good he was at getting horses to navigate the tricky Aintree course.
