The 1892 Grand National was won by Father O’Flynn, and he would do so with ease, coming away from the field to win the contest by a distance of 20 lengths.
Running on ground was described as good. 11 of the 25 contenders in the race were able to get around the course and complete it on the day.
Father O’Flynn was having his first Grand National run here, he would go on to have another four attempts at the race, but this was the only one he would win. In 1896, the last of those five runs, he would finish second, and that was the closest he got to repeating his success.
Relatively unfancied in the market, he was sent off with an SP of 20/1, but that didn’t stop him from recording a very comfortable success.
The horse was trained by Gordon Wilson, and this would actually be the only ever Grand National runner he would have in his career. He was in charge of the horse for the first two of those five runs before moving on elsewhere, so Wilson had two National bids in his career, a winner and a sixth-placed effort.
Captain Roddy Owen would ride the horse to success, and this would be his only Grand National winner, from a total of six attempts. It was very much a case of him coming good at the end of his bids to win this race. A year earlier, he would finish second, and then he would win it this year. Before that, he had little success in the race, failing to finish in three of his four rides while finishing 7th on the other.
Cloister, winner a year later in 1893, would finish second here, while Ilex, winner of the race in 1890, would finish third this time around.
