Well supported in the market, at the age of 13, the winner of the 1894 Grand National was Why Not, who would take the race as one of the 5/1joint favourites.
He was a regular in the race, and despite winning it at 13, he would actually go on to run in the race for the next two seasons after this, finishing 5th in both of those. He would run seven times in the Grand National over his career and ended that with six completions, which is an excellent record.
This would be the only time he would win the race, but he would place second in 1889 and third in 1892. He finished 5th three times, so from the six completions he had, he would finish top five in them all.
Ran on good ground, nine runners would manage to complete the race, and the winner recorded a winning distance of one and a half lengths.
The winning trainer was Willie Moore, and this would kick start off a very strong run in the Aintree Grand National for him. He would win the race a total of three times in a six-year period, beginning with this win in 1894 and ending with a win in the 1899 Grand National.
He also had five placed runners during his career. With a bit more luck, he could have had an even better Grand National record.
Arthur Nightingall was the winning rider, and he was another that had an excellent Grand National record. He would also have a total of three career wins in the race. This would be the middle of his winners, the first was in 1890, and the last came in 1901.
He would also place in the race a total of six times, so just like Moore, with a little more luck, he would have had an excellent Grand National record.
A note for Wild Man From Borneo, who finished first here, he would run really nicely, and this race would set him up perfectly for an Aintree return. He would win the Grand National a year later.
